Concept Launched In Europe
/ 22 December 2005
Slovenia is opening the biggest casino in the country, a cooperative project between Harrah's Entertainment and the Slovenian HIT Group. The casino will offer 70 table games and 1,500, insignificant numbers compared to any American casino, but for Slovenia this is the largest casino project ever. This new casino, half the size of any average American casino, will be testing the water in Europe for the concept of an American casino; an all-including gambling & entertaining complex.
According to Harrah's spokesperson Alberto Lopez, an American casino stands for a casino that brings people the all including Vegas gambling experience. People should be swept of their feet by the sight of the casino complex, dazzled by all it has to offer and completely satisfied after spending an evening and night here.
Slovenia is not the only guinea pig for the American casino concept, in Ciudad Real, Spain; another American Casino is build that will represent the Vegas experience.
The director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling & Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada in Reno, William Eadington, states that the European casino, especially compared to the American casino is incredibly small and lackluster, and is only visited by a handful of people who happen to stumble in by accident.
James Rutherford from the International Gaming & Wagering Business in London claims that it's very important for Americans that want to start up an American casino in Europe, to realize that Europeans have many cultural, linguistic and historical differences, so the concept can't be applied in the same way on all locations. Furthermore, Rutherford believes that many European governments will be against building huge American casino complexes, therefore project developers have to be prepared to shrink the size of their project. Rutherford concludes that the Vegas styled American casino works in the United States, because the Americans are used to them, and Europe isn't there yet.
According to Rutherford Europe needs a smaller variant of an American casino. He is however convinced that size doesn't matter and the American online casino variant will work in Europe and could become a highly successful business. Rutherford uses the example of the Casinos Austria International, who earned 704 million Euros ($804,830,000) in 2004 with a total of 9,900 slots and 1,100 tables, numbers much smaller than the total of slots and tables of Station Casinos (gaming and entertainment company) in the Vegas area alone.
